Gzhel Art, Russian Porcelain, Double Headed Eagle, Collector, Figurine
Do you have a soft spot for blue and white dishes? Yes!
Well…so do I!
In addition to that…I love coming across something unique…which is exactly what I happen to stumble across in one of our treasure hunts in Maryland.
As soon as I spotted this treasure…I thought to myself…”That’s not a normal blue & white ceramic” ….but it was signed, dated and hand painted…so I figured why not..it certainly was interesting to say the least.
Months later…I finally look it up…and low and behold…it is a TRUE Blue & White Treasure!
History bit of this piece…..
Gzhel is a style of ceramics which takes its name from the village of Gzhel and surrounding area, where it has been produced since 1802.
In the 1830s, the Gzhel potters developed a faience, or white earthenware, of a quality that rivaled the creamware being produced in England at the time. They followed the development of faience with the acquisition of porcelain. Porcelain is fired to a similar temperature as stoneware, but unlike stoneware it becomes a translucent white and as such is highly desirable.
